What commercial landscape design involves in Charlotte, what to check before hiring, and how our ranked guide scores the local firms.
Commercial landscape design covers the planning and installation work that shapes the grounds around office parks, retail centers, apartment complexes, HOAs, hospitals, and municipal sites across Charlotte. That includes site grading and drainage plans, planting design suited to the Piedmont's clay soil and humid summers, irrigation systems, hardscape (walkways, retaining walls, plaza paving), and lighting. Many projects also involve permitting and coordination with civil engineers, especially in areas like South End or the University City corridor where stormwater and tree ordinances apply. We've identified 10 firms in Charlotte doing this kind of work, ranging from small design-build shops to larger firms that handle multi-acre corporate campuses.
Before hiring, ask to see completed commercial projects of similar scale, not just residential portfolios. Commercial work has different demands: ADA compliance on walkways, plant selection that tolerates heat off asphalt lots, irrigation systems built for larger zones, and maintenance plans that keep a property looking presentable year-round with minimal callbacks. Get clarity on whether the firm handles both design and installation or subcontracts one piece out, and ask how they price change orders once a project is underway.
Our scoring weighs licensing, insurance, verified reviews from commercial clients, years doing this specific type of work, and responsiveness to quote requests. Two older complaints-one about withheld design deliverables, another about a failed maintenance contract with billing disputes-stand out against a strong record of satisfied patios, walkways, and yard transformations.
Reviewers note a well-stocked nursery with helpful staff offering plant care guidance and wide selection. Two reviews limit detail on design or installation work.
Customers praise the team for strong stonework, clear communication, and steady work on schedule. Reviewers across many years describe fair prices and repeat business. Patios, retaining walls, and travertine repairs come up most often. Some note that early estimates ran low.
